Chapter 9

PIPER

Exactly One Month Later

The next four weeks go by like a blur.

Despite what I told Cole, it turns out that the two collections take a lot more work than I’d anticipated because all ten pieces need to be so unique and so high-end. As a result, I end up having to work nonstop day and night.

And throughout it all, Cole does what he likes to refer to as ‘his job,’ which essentially consists of getting food delivered to me when I work through a meal, having a driver pick me up every time I stay at work even a minute after eight p.m., and showing up in the flesh to personally scold me the few times I lose track of time and end up pulling an all-nighter in my office.

So basically, he’s been Captain Nice Guy for an entire month straight, effortlessly showing off his superhuman ability to make me swoon nonstop.

With Valentine’s now just a few days away, I honestly don’t know that I would’ve been able to finish the extravagant collections with time to spare had it not been for him taking such good care of me.

And it’s not because I would’ve keeled over from malnourishment or lack of sleep or anything like that. But because it was all so darn romantic. All of it. Which served as superfuel for my creative energy, resulting in some of my best designs to date.

So yes, I’d say he’s earned some of my mom’s pot roast tonight.

I’m not quite sure how I feel about my mom calling him up herself to invite him over, but that’s neither here nor there at this point because he’s rolling up our driveaway now.

As expected, my entire family—even some of my aunts, uncles, and cousins—have decided to show up to give him the full Cirillo family welcome.

The last time this many of us gathered together was the time we met my older sister Laura’s boyfriend about six years ago.

Though no one really knows how exactly poor Henry’s leg and arm hair got singed off his body that fateful day, leaving his limbs as smooth as a baby’s bottom for a couple of weeks, what we all did agree on was that we liked him. And we all went to his jail cell that night to tell him as much, too.

Thankfully, after the Sherriff released him from custody—none of the charges stuck, of course—Henry still agreed to marry my sister…and all of us, by extension.

I haven’t thought about that story in ages. Now that I’m looking back and individually cataloging all the confounding events of that day, I realize something.

It was actually a whole lot worse than I remember.

God help us.

As Cole gets out of his rental, my siblings all come filing out the house. Aside from my younger sister Kate who pulls a little more of my mom’s Irish side, the rest of us look just like my dad. Medium brown hair, eyes in the hazel color spectrum, and for the most part, an athletic build.
